Overview of Mononucleosis Symptoms

Epstein-Barr virus causes mono. Popularly known as the kissing disease, EBV infection causes excessive white blood cells in the bloodstream.  Sore throat, fever and malaise are the result of the infection.   

Mono Symptoms

The initial symptoms of mono constitute:

- Chills
- Lack of energy or tiredness
- Loss of appetite 

If these minor symptoms are neglected, intense symptoms starts appearing.  Minor symptoms prevail for one to three days.  The following symptoms are considered to be the severe symptoms:

- Appearance of Glands in the neck area
- Fever
- Severe sore throat

Other Mono Symptoms

Causes of Mono Symptoms

The blood lymphocytes escalate and cause mononucleosis.  The dreadful EBV is the cause of this disease across the world.  Naturally our body’s immune system develops antibodies, which are efficient in fighting against EBV.  In U.S.A. almost 95% people get infected by EBV in an year.  When an individual reaches adulthood, normally the antibodies tend to decrease in blood.  This situation makes him prone to EBV.

EBV can affect any person at any time.  Adulthood is the stage where people get infected by the virus.  It was discovered that mono symptoms affect the people at the age of 15 to 17 very badly and this is considered to be the peak season. 

Though it affects people of all age group, children are affected lesser than adults.  Adolescents and young adults are prone to this disease.  Mono can transmit through saliva from one person to other.  So it is otherwise known as kissing disease.

Throat lozenges provide comfort to throat in mild cases.  Gargling with salt and warm water gives comfort to some extent.  Herbal tea provides significant relief for sore throat and throat pain.  Pain relievers also can be taken to reduce the pain. Complete rest can promote quick recovery.
